I lost a run in Pokerogue and immediately clicked New Game. That's basically the whole review, but let me explain how I got there.

I'd heard people call it a Pok?mon roguelite, which sounded like a weird mix until I actually played it. No Pok?mon Centers, no saves to fall back on, just a chain of battles where one bad decision ends everything. My first run fell apart embarrassingly fast. I picked what looked cool, ignored typing almost entirely, and got punished for it.

The first thing that hit me: you can't just grab your favorites
When you pick starters in Pok?Rogue, each Pok?mon has a cost value, and you've only got a budget to work with. I remember trying to fit in a couple of heavy hitters and realizing there was no room left for anything else. That's when it clicked — this is a Pok?mon browser game where team composition actually matters, not just raw power.

After a couple of failed runs, I stopped chasing the flashiest picks. A balanced Pok?mon team with a couple of different types did better than three "strong" Pok?mon that all died to the same thing.

Runs are built from small decisions
Each run throws different biomes, wild Pok?mon, trainers, and bosses at you, and items you pick up along the way genuinely shape how things go. Items stack, so early choices snowball. I made the mistake of grabbing whatever looked nice instead of thinking about what my team actually lacked, and by the time I hit tougher opponents, I had a pile of stuff that didn't help.

Tougher trainers and bosses are where runs go sideways. I've had promising teams fall apart because I walked into a fight with no healing items and half my team already chipped down.

Catching Pok?mon does more than fill the Pok?dex
Catching wild Pok?mon during a run feeds into your long-term progress. Yes, they can join your team right away, but they also unlock and improve starters for future attempts. I honestly didn't expect catching a random Pok?mon in one run to matter weeks later, but it does — traits like ability and nature carry over to that starter, and you pick up candies as you keep catching and using them too.

That's the part that kept pulling me back. Every failed attempt still added something, so losing didn't feel like wasted time.

How the Pok?Rogue Dex became part of my routine
Here's where I have to mention the Pok?Rogue Dex, because I use it constantly. Not as a guide I read cover to cover, but as the thing I open when I'm second-guessing myself.

Sometimes I'll be staring at a Pok?mon, wondering why it feels weaker than I expected, and end up checking its base stats. Other times I'm planning a team and want to know a Pok?mon's starter cost before I commit, or whether its evolution conditions are realistic for a run that might not last long. I've also checked available moves, abilities, and where certain Pok?mon can even appear, which saved me a lot of pointless guessing.

The Dex isn't magic — it won't play the run for you. But knowing a Pok?mon's typing before I add it to my team stopped me from repeating the same mistakes over and over.

A few things I learned the hard way
Don't ignore type coverage. My first few teams were basically one type with extra steps.

Healing items aren't optional. Since there's no Pok?mon Center mid-run, I now think about recovery before I think about power.

Check before you commit. That's where the Pokerogue Dex helps most — a quick look at stats or a move list can change who I bring.

Try the Daily Run. It gives everyone the same setup for the day, which is a fun break when I want a change from my own messy attempts.

Give it a shot
Pok?Rogue is a fan-made project, not an official Nintendo or Game Freak release, and it's free to play right in your browser. If you grew up with Pok?mon and like the idea of a roguelite that punishes you a little, it's worth a try. Start a run, lose one, start another — and if you're playing, say something, because comparing terrible team choices with other people is half the fun.
